We developed and validated a comprehensive list of nursing tasks in order to help us assess the impact of a novel technology on nurses’ workflow. The activities of nurses on two medical and two surgical wards were observed intermittently over ten days. The final task list grouped nursing activities into the following broad categories: “direct nursing”, “indirect nursing activities”, “medication related activities”, “documentation”, “professional communication”, “ward-related activities”, “in transit”, “supervision”, “social” and “other”.

Learning Objective 1: After participating in this session, the learner should be better able to:
Appreciate the need for specific nursing tasks lists for each setting and country, and understand the process involved in the development and validation of a nursing activity task list which will be subsequently used in a time and motion study.
