One critical barrier to portal adoption is lack of sufficient training. Patients desire instructional support, particularly older patients who have limited technology experience and limited health literacy. This study, now in progress, employs a user-centered design approach to design patient portal multimedia instructional tutorials for older adults. Age-related usability guidelines and evidence-based design principles derived from instructional theories are also used to guide the design decisions.
